AliveOne - Cool atmosphere, solid music, no cover
I found AliveOne Chicago to be a REALLY pleasant surprise in Lincoln Park, and it was a great place to spend my first night in Chicago.
I heard about AliveOne when I asked some locals where I might be able to find some good live music in Lincoln Park. They directed me first to Kingston Mines - though they warned that the cover charge was pretty pricey. (Which I would find out first-hand the very next evening.) Then they mentioned that AliveOne - located just around the block from my room at the Days Inn Chicago - had no cover charge on Mondays and there was almost always a band there. It being Halloween, I followed my ears to AliveOne and couldn't have been happier with the result.
When you walk in, there's a decent chance you won't see a ton of people in the main bar area. This actually works out great, because you can get a drink pretty quickly and then head into the back room where the stage is. (You'll hear the music when you walk in.) Beer prices are cheap - I purchased a Bud bottle because I've spilled one-too-many draft beers at music venues - and the bartender was fast and friendly. Two thumbs up.
However, the best part about AliveOne was definitely the music. The band I saw was made up of locals - I actually think they were attending nearby DePaul - and they switched on and off between original jams, covers and Halloween songs. In particular, the young lady who sang lead vocals had a great voice, and the band was actually pretty tight. Also, there were several people in the room dancing, bobbing their heads and just enjoying a low-key Halloween evening.
AliveOne is absolutely my kind of place, and I would recommend it over the pricier music venues just down the street. (Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S.) I'm probably in the minority there, but AliveOne has a younger crowd, cheaper drinks and, on this night anyways, no cover. What more can you ask for?
