Built to replace the former Chicago and North Western Station demolished in 1984, North Western was designed by Helmut Jahn, who also designed the United Terminal at O'Hare International Airport and the James R. Thompson Center. It one of the two major rail hubs in downtown Chicago along with Union Station which site across the street form its location.
