Merchandise Mart - A great starting point in Chicago

The Merchandise Mart has a surprisingly limited shopping selection given the fact tha, you know, it's the second-biggest building in the country. That being said, this Chicago landmark is worth just to check out its amazing architecture and great location as a starting point for Chicago tourists.

Yes, this building is as big as you’ve heard. If you’ve got some time to kill, it’s worth hopping off the L on the Merchandise Mart stop just to see the exterior of this building from up close. (Only the Pentagon is bigger!)

Be sure to check out the merchandise Hall of Fame out front, which have been described as “giant Pez dispensers” and feature the most famous faces in retail. Inside, the Shops on the Mart are mostly dedicated to interior design, and there is a conference center and showcase area above the first and second floors.

Unless you’re at the Mart for work, a conference or a design showcase, there isn’t really much to see beyond the first two floors. However, the Mart really is a must-see building in Chicago, and is featured on all of the best Chicago tours. Also, it’s a good starting point for the Chicago Riverwalk, and there’s a Holiday Inn Express attached to the Mart. If you’re interested in journalism, check out the Chicago Sun Times building next door.

Take some pictures, grab a coffee and begin your Downtown tour of Chicago at the Merchandise Mart.
