The Chicago Theatre Marquee Tour

Location: Chicago Theatre 175 N. State St.

The tour encompasses historical and architectural highlights of the building, including the grand lobby areas, majestic auditorium and backstage space (when possible) where performers through the years, have left their autographs on the walls of dressing rooms and corridors.

Guides will share with you the stories of the visionaries who opened The Chicago Theatre, whose influence on popular entertainment in Chicago is still recognized today. Tours also include the photo exhibit in The Chicago Theatre's lower lobby, "Chicago: Three Centuries of Theatres."

Shoreline's Chicago River Combination Architecture and Fireworks Cruises depart Ogden Slip at Navy Pier at 8:00 p.m. The 75-minute tour includes a dramatic nighttime Architecture tour led by an experienced, entertaining Shoreline docent, followed by fireworks viewing from Shoreline’s Ogden Slip dock.

Fall Adventure Day

Location: Northerly Island

As the leaves change color and air becomes crisp and cool, autumn is a perfect season to celebrate the great outdoors. The Chicago Park District invites families to Northerly Island, 1400 S. Lynn White Drive, on Saturday, October 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate the season at Fall Adventure Day. Admission is free. No registration is required.

We encourage kids and their families to come out to Northerly Island for this great event to get in touch with nature and experience the fall season in all its glory,” said Timothy J. Mitchell, Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO.

Kids and families can enjoy fall themed arts and crafts at the event. Also, enjoy the local harvest, trade in your favorite ghost stories, fish in Lake Michigan, watch the fall bird migration, enjoy a guided nature hike and celebrate the changing of the season at this fun, educational outdoor event. In addition, participants 8 years and older will have the chance to kayak in Burnham Harbor. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Two trips will be available, one hour each and kayakers will get a chance to paddle around Burnham Harbor.

Tour of The Chicago Theatre

Location: 12:00pm

The tour encompasses historical and architectural highlights of the building, including the grand lobby areas, majestic auditorium and backstage space (when possible) where performers through the years.

Saturday tours occur on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 11am and 12pm. Tours will begin promptly on the hour. When possible, Saturday tours will feature a demonstration on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ.

The running time for all Saturday tours is approximately 1 hour. Reservations do not need to be made in advance unless your party contains more than 10 people.
$5 per person, no reservations necessary

OakToberfest

Location: Downtown Oak Park

Downtown Oak Park embraces the summer season turning to fall at OakToberfest. The 19th annual fall festival will be held September 17 and 18, and will take place on Marion St. and North Blvd. This free two-day event will offer seasonal food from local restaurants, specialty micro-brews, great wines, music and a children’s area featuring a root beer garden.

Local restaurants will vend their special fall recipes for this event. Available fall cuisine includes, ribs, smoked corn on the cob, brats, pulled pork, and more. Vendors will be selling food along North Blvd. throughout the event.

Hand-crafted microbrews such as Samual Adams Octoberfest, Fat Tire, Harvest Moon, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest will be offered for event goers to enjoy. Those over the age of 21 will receive a wrist band, and will be able to purchase a souvenir mug. Premium wines from Trader Joe’s will also be featured.

Six bands will be performing both Friday and Saturday evening covering many different styles of music from Blues to Cajun music. Friday’s line up consists of the Rick Simcox and the Tone Questers performing from 5 to 6 p.m., Reyna Larson performing from 6 to 7:45 p.m. and Paul Cebar performing from 8 to 10 p.m. Live music continues Saturday night starting with Localvores performing from 2 to 3:45 p.m., Chevere de Chicago from 4 to 5:45pm, Way Side Winders from 6-7:45 and CJ Chenier and Red Hot Lousiana Band from 8 to 10pm.

Adler After Dark

Location: Adler Planetarium - 1300 S. Lake Shore Drive

The Chicago Theatre Marquee Tour

Location: Chicago Theatre 175 N. State St.

The tour encompasses historical and architectural highlights of the building, including the grand lobby areas, majestic auditorium and backstage space (when possible) where performers through the years, have left their autographs on the walls of dressing rooms and corridors.

Guides will share with you the stories of the visionaries who opened The Chicago Theatre, whose influence on popular entertainment in Chicago is still recognized today. Tours also include the photo exhibit in The Chicago Theatre's lower lobby, "Chicago: Three Centuries of Theatres."

Shoreline Fall Fireworks Cruises

Location: Museum of Contemporary Art-220 East Chicago

Shoreline Sightseeing continues their popular Fireworks Cruises on Saturday nights from September 18 to October 31 to see the Navy Pier Fireworks featuring special Fall and Halloween themes.

Shoreline's Chicago River Combination Architecture and Fireworks Cruises depart Ogden Slip at Navy Pier at 8:00 p.m. The 75-minute tour includes a dramatic nighttime Architecture tour led by an experienced, entertaining Shoreline docent, followed by fireworks viewing from Shoreline’s Ogden Slip dock.

7th Annual Creatures of the Night

Location: Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave

From bats to owls to spiders, discover how some creatures have special adaptations, or tricks that help them roam in the dark, at Creatures of the Night at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., on Saturday, October 30 from noon to 3 p.m. Admission to Creatures of the Night is $3 and ages 3 and under are free.

This day-time Halloween-themed event is a unique take on the season, taking place among the lush, tropical environment of the Garfield Park Conservatory. Children and families will meet nocturnal creatures at critter stations and learn an adaptation trick each animal possesses. Participants will get a treat at each critter station.
