Dog House - Cheap dogs on the GO
I stumbled upon this hidden gem in Lincoln Park on my way home from the Downtown area in search of those famous Chicago hot dogs I'd heard all about. As it turns out, the Chicago Dog House is quietly famous and has been featured on the Food Network. Given my experience at the Chicago Dog House, none of this surprises me and I'm glad I followed my instincts into this awesome little hot dog joint.
I walked into the Dog House on a Friday night around 7pm, and I was one of just two customers. The other customer was busy raving to the two college kids working there about how great her hot dog was. I knew I had found a winner.
After browsing the menu - which has some creative specialty dogs named after local politicians and celebrities - I ordered the 'Snoop Dog' which has homemade chili and Colby cheese. Combined with a cold can of Coke, I paid $4 for my meal.
The hot dog was out in less than 90 seconds, and I devoured it just as fast. The chili was delicious, the hot dog was big and filling, and the bun was toasted to perfection. All in all, one of the better hot dogs I've had outside of a ballpark, and completely worthy of the Windy City's hot dog reputation.
The service was also excellent. The two guys running the Dog House looked no older than 20, they were polite, personable and genuinely nice. As for the ambiance, they had a small TV with the Wizard of Oz on (a nice touch), and it had a neighborhood feel to it with sturdy wood benches and a counter facing the street. This place is perfect for a quick bite on the go, and makes you want to enjoy your dog IN the restaurant rather than take it to go.
Overall, I'd highly recommend the Dog House if you're in the neighborhood, and I imagine it's incredibly busy after hours given its close proximity to DePaul University.
