Getaway Hostel - Great atmosphere, fun experience
I've been to a few different hostels in America (never been to Europe, so I'm not sure how hostels compare over there), and I have to say that the Chicago Getaway Hostel is the best I've ever been to. That being said, it was also far and away the most expensive.
I ended up at the Getaway Hostel after trying - and failing - to reserve a room at other nearby hotels in Chicago for under $200 on a Friday afternoon. By the time I walked into the Getaway Hostel, I was pretty desperate. When they told me they had one private room left for $150 (!!), I decided to take it. Yes, very expensive for a hostel - but I felt better about the price when they told me I could reserve a dorm bunk bed for the following night for just $46. That was far more reasonable.
The private room had a 1/2 bathroom, and the showers were just down the hall. There was a comfortable bunk bed, but the rest of the room was pretty bare with the exception of a cool Al Capone mural. For $150, you can do a lot better.
However, the rest of the Getaway Hostel was a true hostel experience. The lobby had free Wi-Fi and some comfortable chairs, and given the many countries represented in the hostel there was plenty of people watching and I talked with a number of really interesting travelers. Also, alcohol is allowed (and seemingly encouraged) throughout the Getaway Hostel, and Friday night felt like a makeshift BYOB party. There were guests there of all ages, and I would say for the most part guests were from outside the U.S.
The Getaway Hostel is located on a quiet street in Lincoln Park, with several bars and restaurants just a couple of blocks away in both directions. They have locks that you can buy for $5 if you'd like to place your bags in their lockers. (Which I did, thought they also have free luggage storage which I also took advantage of.) Breakfast is free every morning (if you can wake up before 9:30am), and they have a pool table and a piano in the common area. (Like I said, it was a party atmosphere.)
Also, if you need to recharge your "batteries" and zone out to some TV, there's a living room with a big TV and plenty of comfortable seating. (I enjoyed explaining the rules to American football to some Swedes staying in the hostel while watching the Saints beat down the Buccaneers.)
Overall, while I was bummed about the price for the private room, my experience at the Getaway Hostel was otherwise very positive. The staff was incredibly nice and down-to-earth, and really helpful when it came to recommending things to do in the area. A good choice if you're on a budget, but not nearly as cheap as you might expect.
