Chicago Ties for Most Top Rated Restaurants in North America

1/27/12 | by

No surprise here: Chicago’s restaurants have been rated the best in North America. Tell us something we didn’t already know...

The prestigious AAA Five Diamond Awards for 2012 have been released and five restaurants in Chicago were awarded with the coveted honor. This is a huge statement as Chicago ties New York City with the most Five Diamond eateries in North America.

The five Five Diamond awarded restaurants in Chicago are Alinea, Arun’s, Charlie Trotter’s, Everest and Tru -- all of which are veteran Five Diamond recipients. Alinea has made the list six times, Arun’s 10 times, Tru 12 times and Everest 15 times. Charlie Trotters, which unexpectedly announced plans to close in August, has made the list a whopping 18 times.

Last year, Chicago actually had seven refined restaurants receive a Five Diamond rating. The two from last year that did not repeat, Avenues and Seasons, have since closed.

Just 53 restaurants were eligible for the honor of the Five Diamond award, but there are a total of 59,000 AAA rated lodgings and restaurants in North America.

AAA also awarded Chicago with four Five Diamond hotels including The Elysian Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel, Peninsula Chicago and Trump International Hotel & Tower.

AAA started listing lodging and hospitality information in its travel publications back in the early 1900’s, but the Diamond rating for restaurants -- as we know it today -- began in 1989. It’s considered one of, if not the most trusted restaurant rating process for North America.
