Five Free Things to Do in Chicago This August

August is here, and this is one of the best months to visit the Windy City! We love all of the free events, festivals and other things to do in Chicago in August, and you're going to too! Whether you're a local, a regular or just in town for a weekend every now and then, be sure to check out some (or all) of these great things to do in Chicago while the weather is still warm, the sun is still shining and the ice cream is still melting.

There are so many free things to do in Chicago this August that make it so that you won't have to worry about breaking the bank just because you're traveling. Every weekend in Chicago there's going to be something new, different and FREE to do while you're here, so load up the gang and check these Chicago events out, starting this weekend!

1. Festa Italiana
In Chicago's Little Italy (Taylor Street), known for all of the great Italian restaurants and culture, the Festa Italiana goes from Thursday to Sunday (August 9-12), celebrating the Italian culture that has been prominent in the area since Italians starting immigrating to this city in the 1850s. Food, arts, clothes and activities will all be heavily Italian, and if you know anything about Italian food and culture, we mean heavy! Come with an empty belly and get ready to sing and dance along with three stages of performers, participate in the Fontanini meatball eating contest, grape stomping and a bocce ball tournament. This is the perfect event for the whole family!

2. Chicago Air and Water Show
This is the largest and oldest free show of it's kind in the entire country, so if you're in Chicago from August 18-19, be sure to check out the US Army, Navy and Air Force put on the show of the year! Perfect for all ages, there are usually about 2 million people enjoying the show from all over Chicago. The best views of the show range from North Avenue Beach to Oak Street Beach, but there are also Chicago boat tours that offer a new take on the show!

3. Long Grove Art Fest
An artsy event in Chicago, shocker! From August 18-19, come and see fine art, jewelry and crafts from over 100 national artists in the 24th year of this Chicago festival. Live music, food and wine vendors and kid-friendly activities make it fun for the whole family, and free admission is just icing on the cake!

4. Taste of Latin America
Of course, there are always food centered events happening in Chicago. This city loves to eat, and they surely always celebrate the cultural diversity in the area. The Taste of Latin America goes from August 24-26 and is one of the newest foodie fests in the city! Come celebrate the food, wine, arts and crafts and music of Central and South America in Chicago this year in Logan Square!

5. Chicago Jazz Festival
August 30 will mark the 34th year of the Chicago Jazz Fest. This is the city's longest-running lakefront music festival, so obviously there's a reason that people keep coming back for more every year. That reason may be because it's a free concert, but all the great music and good times don't hurt either. The festival hosts local and international performers all weekend long, starting at the Chicago Cultural Center and moving to Grant Park on Saturday and Sunday. Roy Haynes, Dianne Reeves and Allen Toussaint are all headliners this year.

These are just five of the great things happening in Chicago this August, but there are so many things to do and see this month! The great thing about all of these events is that they're free and for the most part, are great Chicago traditions! Many of these festivities have been going on annually for many years, and some of them are just starting out, but they all promise an unforgettable experience for your next Chicago vacation.
