Frontera Grill - No reservations? No problem!
According to the Hop On Hop Off Tour Guide I encountered, the Frontera Grill was voted the "Best Restaurant in America" in 2007. I was also told that restaurateur Rick Bayless - who owns the Frontera Grill and the neighboring Topolobampo - turned down an offer to be the White House's resident chef so that he could stay in Chicago. After a little Googling, it turns out that both are True - which means you should probably stop into this unique Mexican restaurant on your next trip to Chicago.
Frontera is great because they don't take reservations. "Wait," you might ask, "why is that great? It sounds like a pain." Well, this means you don't have to make reservations months in advance or grease any palms to get into one of the best restaurants in the city - simply show up and hope for the best.
The only knock I have against Frontera Grill is its location. In my opinion, it felt slightly off the beaten path (a map tells me otherwise, but that was just the vibe I got), and the gimmick-y Rainforest Cafe and the McDonald's with the world's largest "Golden Arches" are nearby and give the neighborhood a Disneyland or Times Square feel that was very un-Chicago.
That being said, it's hard to shoot down a restaurant as famous and well-reviewed as the Frontera Grill. Worth a shot if you're in the area for lunch; just don't count on finding a table at dinner.
