Giordano's - THIS is the Chicago deep-dish I was looking for!
It took me nearly a full week to find the Chicago deep-dish pizza I had heard about and - let's face it - dreamed of. Finally, I made the pilgrimage to Giordano's in the South Loop of Chicago. I have to say, it was everything I imagined it would be. (And then some.)
Around lunchtime on a quiet Monday afternoon, I ordered up a personal deep-dish sausage pizza, pre-made to order for less than $7! This is their daily lunch special, which I ordered from the bar and went PERFECT with a cold glass of Coke. I admit - I essentially starved myself that morning so that I would be especially prepared to take down the notorious deep dish. Good to the last bite, I scraped my plate clean, proof that Giordano's Pizza is as good as advertised.
For those that haven't tried it, Chicago deep-dish pizza stuffs the cheese and the toppings on the inside, with the sauce located on top of the pizza for an "inside-out" style of pizza. The pizza came out in about 5 minutes, as the bartender explained to me that they make several pizzas for lunch and keep them warm. (He also gave me the option of ordering a custom pizza, which he said would take about 35 minutes. However, sausage sounded perfect to me.) The pizza came out hot, but not scalding hot which I appreciated.
Shaped in an almost perfect circle, the pizza looked and tasted just as I had anticipated, if not better. I was very full when it was all said and done, but I was fully satisfied and you really can't beat the value for the price. I'm not sure if Giordano's has the best deep-dish pizza in Chicago, but in my opinion it was pretty amazing. (And I worked in a pizzeria for the better part of a decade.) Definitely worth a trip on your next visit to Chicago if you're in search of the deep-dish pizza that everyone in the Windy City is so infatuated with.
