Goose Island -
As a lover of micro-breweries and baseball, it makes sense that I would follow two of my favorites to Goose Island Wrigleyville. Granted, I probably would have had an entirely different experience if I visited Goose Island (which is give or take about 100 yards from Wrigley Field) on a game day. However, even on a cold November afternoon, it still served as a quality place to grab a drink and enjoy a little conversation. What more can you ask for out of your local bar?
I became aware of Goose Island - one of the few local breweries in the Chicago area - on my first night in Chicago. However, it wasn't until I made the trip to Wrigley Field and toured the surrounding (and legendary) Wrigleyville bar scene that I discovered one of their flagship breweries.
A welcome refuge from the drizzle outside, I grabbed a seat at the bar and enjoyed a little chit-chat with the bartender. Not only did he let me sample as many of their homemade beers as I pleased, but he also had some great insight into their seasonal offerings like the Hefeweizen. Great service, great guy - gotta' love friendly bartenders.
However, the bartender also informed me that (unfortunately) Goose Island had been sold just a few weeks before to the giant beer distributor InBev. While this is yet another blow to small, independent American breweries, the bartender assured me that Goose Island Wrigleyville wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.
I took a peak at the food menu at Goose Island, but didn't order anything. (I'm pretty against ordering any type of sandwich that's over $10.) I also enjoyed a stroll around the brewery, just to see what type of Cubs memorabilia they had. (Given the rain, I wasn't in any sort of rush.)
If you like baseball and beer, this is absolutely the place for you - I know I loved it.
