Palmer House Hilton - A Chicago landmark
The Palmer House Hilton in Chicago is one of the most prominent and famous hotels in Chicago, as evidenced by its massive lobby and multiple mentions on Chicago tours. (Full disclosure: I didn't stay here, but I did visit the lobby and talked briefly with the staff.) Located near the Financial District in The Loop, the Palmer House was packed from the hotel lobby to the bar with businesspeople on iPads and cell phones.
As explained on the Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour I took, Potter Palmer built the hotel for his wife Bertha Palmer as a "gift" in the late-1800's, and as it was explained to me, both are known as two of the most influential people in the history of Chicago.
If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Chicago, stop in to their lobby for a drink – there’s plenty of seating and tables available, though I wasn’t picking up a WiFi connection. (There’s a Starbucks in the lobby to take care of that problem, however.)
There’s also the Lockwood Restaurant and Bar attached to the lobby, but the real gem of the Palmer House Hilton is the lobby ceiling. Roman-inspired, decadent and clearly a product of the early-20th century, this luxury hotel does its original owner and namesake proud. Stay here if you can afford it, especially if you're in town on business in The Loop.
