The Southern Chicago - Excellent Food and Service
I had a great experience at The Southern! I was in Chicago on a business trip and the night I got in I was starving, so I went searching for something to eat at 9:30 before everything closed. I was in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area and kind of just stumbled in here. I was immediately seated on their patio, which is a great outdoor space if it’s nice outside. They actually managed to achieve a uniquely southern ambiance out there.
My waitress was unbelievably nice! I told her I was from out of town and she literally gave me a whole list of places to go in the city. Very sweet! The food was excellent too! I ordered the Andouille Gumbo. It was delicious! It was in a really nice dark and spicy sauce, which I loved! My only complaint would be that the portion was kind of small in my opinion, especially for an entree. If you like to eat like me, I’d recommend getting an appetizer too. I actually heard that they even grow a lot of their own vegetables and herbs in-house that they use in their food. Love that! They also had a nice bar that stays open until 2am. Their kitchen closes earlier, around 10pm. I’d definitely recommend it for anyone that’s looking for a nice, relaxing place to enjoy good food, drinks and service.

The Southern - Southern class in Wicker Park
The Southern is a classy restaurant and bar in Wicker Park Chicago that, in my opinion, is perfect for a quiet late-night drink with a significant other or friends. I really liked the ambiance of The Southern, and their drink menu was unique and featured several signature cocktails.
I stopped into The Southern with some friends around 9:30pm on a Thursday, and the bar area was about 30% full. The bartenders were fast and friendly, albeit a little bummed that we were not ordering food as well.
They had an old movie playing on their two TVs which, as a sports fan, I'm normally vehemently opposed to. However, on this night I was catching up with old friends and was glad that I didn't have ESPN on to distract me. (Eventually, my buddy did ask for his Sportscenter fix, which the bartender begrudgingly agreed to.)
The music at The Southern was quiet but existent, serving more as background noise than anything else. Overall it was a laid-back, calm atmosphere for a Thursday night and a great place for the first cocktail of the night.
Even though I didn't stay for dinner, I really enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of The Southern. For what it's worth, I was told by Lincoln Park locals that their brunch is excellent. However, for 5 drinks the tab ran $50 plus tips. Yikes.
All that being said, I would definitely recommend The Southern if you're in the modd for a little Southern hospitality.
