Chicago O'Hare International Airport was originally known as Orchard Field, but renamed in 1949 to honor naval pilot Edward "Butch" O'Hare. For over 30 years, Chicago O'Hare has been considered the world's commercial aviation capital and is the hub of all U.S. air transportation and the top economic engine of the Midwest.

Inside Chicago O'Hare, you'll find several outstanding art and educational exhibits, including permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibits.

On loan from the Chicago Field Museum, the four story Brachiosaurus Dinosaur skeleton is truly a sight to behold. It is located in the B concourse of Terminal 1 in Chicago O'Hare, and is a big hit with both kids and adults.

Traveling with kids can be tough, so make sure to take them to the Kids on the Fly Children’s Exhibit which is located in Terminal 2. The exhibit educates kids about the workings of an airport, and uses interactive activities to make learning fun.

ATS: Chicago O'Hare has its own Airport Transit System which is free to all passengers. The Airport Transit System runs 24 hours a day and operates between the international and domestic terminals, the Metra station, andlong-term parking. The Airport Transit System can carry up to 2,400 passengers an hour, and is a fast and efficient way to get around.

Airport Shuttles: There are several different airport shuttles that operate out of Chicago O'Hare and service the local Chicago area and hotels.

Car Rental:Alamo, Hertz,Budget,Avis, National, and Dollarrental car agencies are all located inside O'Hare International.

Public Transportation:Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' train (Blue Line) and commuter trains both depart from O'Hare International Airport.

Parking

There are a number of different parking lots at the Chicago Airport, including those for people with disabilities, and valet parking. Parking rates range from $2.00 for the first hour, up to $51.00 for 24 hours. Long term parking for up to 30 days is also available, however arrangements with the Chicago airport must be made if a vehicle is to be left for longer than 30 days.

Curbside waiting is not allowed at Chicago O'Hare, and people waiting to pick up passengers must use the cell phone lot to wait in. There are 150 spaces available in this lot. For those dropping passengers off, the "Kiss 'n' Fly" drop off point provides passengers with quick and efficient transportation to the Airport Transit System. From there, passengers are taken to their departure terminal.

Environmental Policies

Like many airports, O'Hare International Airport is trying to reduce its carbon footprint. The Chicago airport has implemented a number of environmental policies to try and achieve this goal, including:

  • Ensuring that all airport construction vehicles are more energy efficient, and use cleaner fuel.
  • Installing LED energy efficient edge lighting on all runways.
  • Replacing large amounts of low quality wetlands on the O'Hare International property with higher quality wetlands.
