Eating Around the City

Chicago's cosmopolitan makeup is reflected in its plethora of ethnic restaurants. Italian food, ranging from hearty deep-dish pizza (developed in 1943 at Pizzeria Uno) to delicately crafted creations presented at stylish trattorias, continues to dominate a very dynamic scene. Recently, there's been a surge of popularity for New American cuisine. Thai restaurants still thrive, as do ones with a broad Mediterranean slant, many of which serve tapas; and there are still plenty of opportunities to sample more longstanding Chicago cuisines. Of course, a number of establishments serve good old-fashioned barbecue ribs, a legacy of Chicago's days as the nation's meatpacker. And no visit is complete without sampling a messy Italian beef sandwich, or a Chicago-style hot dog, laden with tomatoes, onions, hot peppers and a pickle. The largest concentration of restaurants is found north and west of the Loop:

  • To the west, Greektown, around Halsted Street at Jackson Boulevard, and Little Italy, on and around Taylor Street, are worth a look.
  • The Near North and River North areas harbor a good number of upscale places.
  • Chinatown, though not pretty, is a predictably good neighborhood for Cantonese and Szechuan food.

Asian Chicago Restaurants

Asian Chicago Restaurants

When it comes to top Chicago restaurants, many of these are Asian themed. Whether you're craving sushi, Chines food, Thai cuisine or Pan-Asian fusion, Chicago has just what you're looking for. See below for some of these Asian Chicago Dining and Restaurants we recommend:

  • Aria Restaurant is a top Chicago restaurant. This tech savvy restaurant offers i-pads in the form of menus and has an extensive sushi menu as well as fine Asian cuisine and plenty of cocktails to choose from. Located in the ultra posh Fairmont Hotel, Aria Restaurant is a fashionable place to see and be seen.
  • Sunda New Asian is popular with celebrities and Chicago trendsetters alike. A fancy and modern restaurant, Sunda New Asian offers simplistic yet extremely high quality menu items and has an exceptional drink menu. If looking for an exclusive and fashionable Chicago restaurant, Sunda New Asian is a good bet.

Chicago Specialties

  • Best Chicago Deep Dish Pizza: Piece Brewery and Pizzeria in trendy Wicker Park, Pequod's Pizzeria in DePaul, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria in River North and The Art of Pizza in Lakeview are all top contenders for the best deep dish pizza in Chicago - but the competition is stiff and we're not saying that you won't find a delicious hearty pie anywhere else! Can't decide? Book a Chicago Food Tour and try all the best while exploring the city!
  • Chicago Hot Dogs: Hot Dougs, Portillo's Hot Dogs and Frank 'N' Dawgs are all best in show in our opinion! Don't be the Chicago Traveler that wants a plain dog with maybe a little ketchup on it - that will not fly here! Go big or go home and try the Chicago style dog while you're here!
  • Chicago Italian Restaurants: Salatino's is a popular Italian eatery that features both a classy restaurant and an upscale bar area. Three Aces is a super edgy small plate Italian restaurant that attracts a hip local crowd. Famous for its burgers and unique menu, Three Aces is perfect for a quick bite en route or after a day of Chicago sight-seeing. Reasonably priced Davanti Enoteca is a great way to enjoy fine Italian Chicago food on a budget.

 Other Thoughts

When it comes to dining, Chicago has it all – and some of the best in the nation. Of course we’re known for our Chicago pizza, hot dogs, beef sandwiches and Midwestern steaks, but we have so much more to offer.

It’s difficult to make dining recommendations in the Chicago area because there are so many to choose from. Be sure to check with your hotel concierge, family, friends and business acquaintances who are likely to know the hot spots.

Here are just a few possibilities:

  • We have Chicago Dining Discount Coupons
  • For a Romantic Dinner for two, try the Signature Room at the 95th located in the Hancock Building, or perhaps Seasons at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago.
  • For Excellent Italian, choose Coco Pazzo at Hubbard and Franklin Streets, Rosebud on Rush (near Superior Street) or Vinci at Halsted and Willow Streets.
  • For Mexican, we like Frontera Grill on North Clark Street at Hubbard Street or, for an economical excellent choice, Las Mananitas on Halsted Street south of Addison.
  • If your taste buds are asking for Seafood, you can’t beat Nick’s Fishmarket at Clark and Monroe Streets or McCormick’s & Schmick’s located on Chestnut near Rush Street.
  • Our choices for Fine Steaks include Gibson’s and Tavern on Rush.
  • Chinatown has many fine choices for authentic Chinese Cuisine.
  • And if you'd like a break from the Chicago restaurant scene but still looove to eat, try a food tour from one of the best and most established companies, Chicago Dine-Around.  They offer a neat progressive tour at three different restaurants.

Oh, and back to the Chicago favorites:

  • We recommend Pizzeria Uno and Lou Malanati's for the Best Pizza.
  • For Chicago Hot Dogs and Beef Sandwiches, Portillos (Chicago/suburban locations), as well as Buona Beef and Johnnie’s Beef (suburban locations), are highly recommended.

Find the best restaurants in Chicago near a few of the most popular attractions!  Plan ahead and figure out where you want to eat in advance - make a reservation as many of the popular places fill up for both lunch and dinner.
