State and Lake - Solid food but very forgettable

When I walked into the State and Lake Restaurant on a Saturday morning, I was starving. I had just tried - and failed - to get to the top of the Willis Tower, and decided to hop on the L Train back to the north side of The Loop for a big breakfast. Having read about State and Lake earlier, their big sign next to theWit Hotel caught my eye and I figured, 'What the heck?'

State and Lake was about what I expected - a boring hotel restaurant with decent food and better service. I sat at the bar and ordered an orange juice and a coffee, and after being assured by the bartender that the Eggs Benedict was a great choice, I ordered up one of my favorite breakfast dishes.

The food was pretty bland, but by no means 'bad.' I ate every single bite, and I didn't have that uncomfortable "full" feeling when I finally worked up the energy to continue on with my day. Plus, I got to watch some college football while chowing down, which is one of my favorite Saturday morning traditions. For $23 plus tip, it was sort of expensive but about what I expected, and you get free juice refills.

My server (the bartender) was nice and attentive without being obtrusive, and given that State and Lake is close to so many attractions (the Chicago Theatre, in particular, is just down the street), I'd recommend it if you're in the area and looking for something quick and simple. It doesn't strike me as the type of place that ever has a wait, and their menu has just enough to keep the entire table happy.

State and Lake Chicago - Nice Vibe, Average Food

State and Lake is an alright restaurant. Nothing all that special, but it’s decent. The ambiance is nice. Kind of a dark and quieter ambiance but still feels busy. The hotel it’s in, theWit is very nice and has a great ambiance! The food is more of the downfall. The prices were a little high and the quality wasn’t quite that high. The menu is smaller so there aren’t that many options. Although the buffalo fries are amazing! Definitely order them! But other then that, the food was just ok. The service was the same... just ok. It’s in a great location, right by the Chicago river. So it’s a really convenient place to eat, but just alright. Nice vibe, but just average food.
