John Hancock Chicago - You Have to Go to the Top!
Forget about the Sears Tower, which is mostly just tourist central. If you want a really cool experience at a Chicago skyscraper, head over to the John Hancock. There is the observatory at the top, but avoid that as you have to pay to enter there. Most people don’t think about this, but just go to the lounge/restaurant area at the very top, which is free to get in and it has the same view.
We sat at the bar and just ordered a drink, and it was so much better then the observatory anyways. It’s got a really trendy vibe in the bar and it overlooks the whole city. I definitely recommend going during sunset so you can see all the lights of the city start to turn on. I hear sometimes there’s really long lines to get a seat in the lounge area, but we got seated right away. It’s the perfect place to hang out, sip on a cocktail and enjoy the amazing views. All ladies should go in the women’s restroom while your here. I heard it’s incredible with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the city. I wouldn’t know though considering the men’s restroom was no better then the public bathroom at Navy Pier, but I hear the women’s is phenomenal!

John Hancock Center - Great meeting place
The John Hancock Center is essentially just the bottom area of the John Hancock Building. There are a few shops, a Cheesecake Factory, and it's where you buy your tickets to the John Hancock Observatory or take the elevator to the 95th floor Signature Room. (Oh, and there's a post office.)
The Hancock Center is convenient because the building is so recognizable and geographically-centered that it makes for the perfect meeting place; I was actually picked up for two separate tours at the Hancock Center, which goes to show you what locals consider it useful for. There's not really too much more to say about the Hancock Center, other than don't just sit there - take the elevator to the top! That's where the real views are.
