Shedd Aquarium - As Far as Aquariums Go, It's the Best
What a great aquarium! It rests right on Lake Michigan. If you’re up for an adventure, the best way to get here is by water taxi. I took one over from Navy Pier. It’s cheaper then a cab, and a lot more fun! The ride on the lake was a great time. You get an amazing view of the Chicago skyline, and then the boat literally parks right in front of the aquarium.
Typically, I’m not so much into aquariums but this one is different. It’s better! It’s about as close to Sea World as it gets. Definitely make sure you plan your day accordingly to see the dolphin show. They’re at certain scheduled times throughout the day, so it could be easy to miss them. The dolphin show is especially cool because the water for the show goes to the edge of the building where the floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the water of Lake Michigan in the background. In the show, the dolphins jump straight out of the water and the trainers teach you how the training works. It was pretty fascinating.
There was also the Jellies exhibit when I was there. Jelly fish are certainly strange creatures but fascinating to watch. You can touch a live starfish, which is completely disgusting. But hey, you only live once right. Check out the penguins on the bottom floor. They come right up to the glass. I’ve been to zoos all around the country, but I’ve never been that close up to a penguin before. They’re adorable to watch. They also have the longest living fish of any aquarium in the world. It’s been there since the 1930’s! Ask someone where it is. I wouldn’t have found it unless I asked. They also have sea horses, eels, otters, beluga whales, I could go on and on.
If you’re planning on visiting a bunch of different attractions in Chicago, get the city pass. It really did save me a lot of money and you also get free tickets to different stuff in the aquarium like the dolphin show. Yeah, it costs extra. Lame, I know.
When I went, I didn’t plan accordingly. I only had two hours, but I recommend planning to be here for at least four hours if you want to see everything.
