Viceroy Hotel Chicago

It’s no surprise that the Viceroy Chicago is the Gold Coast winner for location, food, drink and style. Voted the #1 hotel in Chicago Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Awards 2018, the five-star accommodations are tucked into a 120-year-old building along Lake Michigan. The preserved brick and terracotta facade is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the then-meets-now aesthetic on the site of the famed 1920s era Cedar Hotel. Yes, it’s one of the priciest stays in town, but there are some pretty luxe amenities. For one, you get complimentary transportation in the hotel’s house Tesla Model X. There’s also a swanky rooftop cocktail lounge and pool, so you can literally live the high life during your stay.

Viceroy Chicago: Best for… Posh Pets

You will certainly stay in the lap of luxury at The Viceroy, and so will your four-legged friends. The hotel is not only pet friendly, but has a signature PAW (pets are welcome) program that includes a Viceroy custom pet bed, food and water bowls, and plush toys to play with. You’ll pay a nominal fee—$50 per pet, per night—but a portion of that goes to Orphans of the Storm, a Chicago-based nonprofit that helps rescue animals and homeless pets in the city. Upon arrival, your pooch is welcomed by name, and the hotel provides courtesy bags. If you’re out for a long day, the concierge can arrange dog walking services for you.

Viceroy Chicago Amenities

For the steep price and five-star rating, you can bet there are some pretty swanky amenities at The Viceroy. Guest rooms include king and double queen layouts, and you can upgrade for more space or a lake view. There are also several luxe suites, including junior studios, one-bedrooms, a junior suite with terrace, and the ultra luxurious Penthouse Suite. An array of accessible rooms offer accommodations such as mobility/hearing accessibility, tubs with grab bars, and visual alarms and notification devices.

Whichever layout you choose, all guests have access to complimentary transportation in the house Tesla Model X. There is also free WiFi, ultra cozy linens, luxury bath products by ROIL and Natura Bisse, and 24-hour in-room dining. Rooms also feature a Nespresso machine, chic workspace, refreshment center with local and artisanal fare, and a rain shower in the bathroom.

During your stay, there is a lot of on-site entertainment. Partnering with Boka Restaurant Group, Somerset serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Seasonal American cuisine complements American Country Club–inspired interiors. There’s also an outdoor patio for al fresco dining in warmer months. In the summer, taking advantage of the hotel’s crown jewel, Deveraux, is a must. The rooftop lounge and seasonal pool is situated on the 18th floor. Swim up to craft cocktails and small plates concocted by Chef Wolen and enjoy unbeatable views of the skyline and Lake Michigan.

The hotel also boasts a customizable event space that can host up to 120 guests along with striking views of the city. Weddings are also popular at the Chicago icon, and the hotel employs a team of wedding professionals.

Viceroy Chicago Location

Tucked in the exclusive Gold Coast neighborhood along Lake Michigan, Viceroy is in the heart of the best of Chicago entertainment. For art and culture, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Richard Driehaus Museum are within an easy walk. The John Hancock building with its famed 360 Chicago overlook is just a stone’s throw as well. You’re also right next to Michigan Avenue and all of the shopping on Magnificent Mile. Oak Street Shopping is even closer, featuring a mix of international designers, local boutiques and American luxury designers. You can also head to Oak Street Beach and the Lakefront Trail just a block east.

That said, the city is your oyster when you stay at Viceroy. Just hop in that Tesla and head to wherever your heart desires. Nearby hotels include Thompson Chicago, The Talbott Hotel, and Waldorf Astoria. This area is called Gold Coast for a reason, so hotels here are pricey. Viceroy is at the top of the line, but it offers some great perks for the price.

Viceroy Chicago: The Verdict

If you can swing it, why the heck not. Viceroy Chicago is tucked in an iconic historic building in the Gold Coast neighborhood. There’s a house Tesla that offers free transport, luxe in-room amenities, and Michilan Star on-site dining. Did we mention the rooftop pool and lounge? It’s pretty swanky, even your pet can get the royal treatment here. Of course, the price is steep. So if it’s out of your budget, make sure to stop here and have a craft cocktail at Deveraux’s rooftop lounge.
