Lookingglass
Alice
Lookingglass Theatre Company
Water Tower Water Works, 821 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, 60611
312-337-0665
Following a highly successful east coast tour, Lookingglass Theatre
Company’s Lookingglass Alice tumbles its way back home to Chicago’s
historic Water Tower Water Works, 821 N. Michigan Ave. at Pearson, for a
summer run starting June 20, 2007.
Adapted by Ensemble member and Artistic Director David Catlin from Lewis
Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass,
Lookingglass Alice is a muscular, acrobatic, and dizzyingly playful show
for all ages. This Alice falls, floats, flies, defies gravity and the
rules of logic during her wonderland journey through the looking glass to
become a queen. With a juggling Mad Hatter, a precariously balancing
Humpty Dumpty, and a bumbling Knight who invents his way into Alice’s
heart, Lookingglass Alice revisits the stories that inspired the founding
of Lookingglass Theatre Company.

Barrel of Monkeys
Neo-Futurarium
5153 N. Ashland Ave., Chicago, IL 60640
WHAT: Barrel of Monkeys’ tenth anniversary began September 7, 2007, and
continues their run of “That’s Weird, Grandma” at 8 p.m. on Monday nights
at the Neo-Futurarium in Chicago. These new installments of the critically
acclaimed assortment of scenes and songs are adapted by the ensemble from
at-risk Chicago public school students.
After teaching creative writing in the CPS system, BOM’s ensemble of
actors, comedians, musicians and playwrights selects and adapts some of
the thousands of stories generated by children for stage presentation. The
result has been an audience favorite – a show that is “safe” for all ages,
yet very much appreciated by an adult audience. “That’s Weird, Grandma”
changes each week according to audience votes (switching 2-3 sketches each
performance), and each show runs about one hour. The show started in April
2001, and has produced over 500 stories and musical numbers.

The Boys from
Syracuse
Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace
David Bell’s brand new adaptation of the classic Richard Rodgers (The King
& I, South Pacific, The Sound of Music) and Laurence Hart hit The Boys
from Syracuse, will make its Chicago Premiere August 7, open August 14 and
run through September 28 at Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace, 100 Drury
Lane, Oakbrook Terrace, IL. Premiering in 1938 and based on Shakespeare’s
The Comedy of Errors, The Boys From Syracuse was the first musical written
based on a Shakespeare play. The Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace
production will star Rod Thomas as Antipholus of Ephesus and Timothy
Gregory will star as Antipholus of Syracuse.
The Boys from Syracuse revolves around the escapades and romantic mix-ups
of long-separated identical twins Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of
Syracuse, whose servants, the two Dromios, are also long-separated
identical twins. Complications arise when the wives of the Ephesians,
Adriana and her servant Luce, mistake the two strangers for their
husbands. The ironic tale of these separated brothers is a hilarious take
on the classic Shakespearean story. This runaway Broadway hit combines
Richard Rodgers’ rich melodies and Laurence Hart’s witty lyrics in the
classic score, including “Falling in Love with Love,” “Sing for Your
Supper,” and “This Can’t be Love.” The Boys from Syracuse is as
entertaining, vibrant, and riotous as when it first took Broadway by
storm.

The Jenkins
Farm Project
Theatre Building Chicago
1225 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago, IL 60657; North Theatre
Chicago Premiere of Beserra Dance Theater’s Multi-Media Dance Theater
Installation “The Jenkins Farm Project”
WHAT: “The Jenkins Farm Project,” conceived and choreographed by Annie
Arnoult Beserra (granddaughter of Annie Lee Jenkins, whose family is
explored in this project), is a multi-media dance theater installation
that transforms the real stories of a North Carolina farming family into
an interactive performance that questions the meaning of home, family,
memory, and mental illness against the crumbling backdrop of a depression
era homestead.
In this hour-long, non-traditional viewing experience, audiences move
through the installed performance like an art gallery – listening,
watching and touching isolated moments from the Jenkins farm in the same
physical space as the performers. A composite of home movies, interviews,
historical images, and dancers shot on the actual North Carolina farm, the
video component weaves in and out of the live choreography, text, and
music. Video images and voices of Glenn and Jeannette Jenkins, both of
whom suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, provide conflicting narratives
and a theatrical framework for the video collage that fills the fractured
surfaces of the sculptural set. The dynamic integration of dance and
theater plays within, against, and around an original
bluegrass-blues-hymn-folk-inspired score by Chicago composers Matt Reed
and Colby Beserra.
September 4 – November 2, 2008
The Glass
Menagerie by Tennessee Williams
Shattered Globe Theatre
2936 N. Southport, Suite 210
Chicago, IL 60657
9/11 – 11/2/08: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; and Sundays at
3 p.m.
“The Glass Menagerie” was Williams's first successful play, and is
accounted by many to be a biographical work about his life, the characters
and story mimicking his own more closely than any of his other works.
Inspired by real events, Williams employs themes of illusion and escape to
depict the delicacy of family life in this “memory play.” “The Glass
Menagerie” is a memory play—both its style and its content are shaped and
inspired by memory. Most importantly. the story is told because of the
inflexible grip it has on the narrator’s memory. Among the most prominent
and urgent themes of this play is the difficulty the characters have in
accepting and relating to reality. Each member of the Wingfield family is
unable to overcome this difficulty, and each, as a result, withdraws into
a private world of illusion where he or she finds the comfort and meaning
that the real world does not seem to offer. “The Glass Menagerie”
identifies the conquest of reality by illusion as a huge and growing
aspect of the human condition in its time.
