State Street - Am I in NYC?

Before I visited Chicago, I had read reviews that State Street been replaced by the Magnificent Mile as the Mecca of Chicago shopping. I'm here to put those rumors to rest - State Street is still very much the center of some of the best shopping in Chicago.

Actually, I thought the geography of State St. made it much easier to get around and find all of the shops you had heard about compared to the Magnificent Mile. In fact, I was reminded of Park Avenue in NYC when walking down State Street; the street itself is wide, there's tons of foot traffic, the Red line subway drops you off right in front of the Macy's department store, and during the holiday season there are Christmas decorations everywhere. I was dealing with some serious deja vu on State Street.

While I'm not a big shopper, I can vouch that there are several excellent stores to visit on State Street, from accessories to shoes and the aforementioned Macy's. Just make sure you know which direction you're headed, as State St. is one of the biggest and most sprawling streets in Chicago. A must if you're a shopper, and even if you're not.

State Street Chicago - A Street You Must Walk Down

Well, if you come to Chicago, you will clearly experience State Street. It’s basically the main street in town and runs right through the center of downtown. There’s tons of shopping and restaurants on State Street. If the weather is nice, it’s a great street just walk all the way down to get a feel for the downtown area of Chicago. It also has a really nice bridge that goes across the Chicago river that you can walk across. A great photo op! There’s a ton a great architectural buildings on this street, so you definitely don’t want to miss it. Next to Michigan Avenue, it has the most to see of any street in the city.

Summary

Features: State Street is Chicago's "main street," located in the very heart of the city. For 165 years, it's been the unparalleled retail and entertainment hub of the Midwest. The 1922 hit song "Chicago" gave the street its famous nickname: "That Great Street," where they do things they don't do on Broadway!

Historic anchors Marshal Field's (now Macy's) and Carson Pirie Scott have been through the ups and downs of State Street. After a slump in the 1970's, State Street was closed to automobiles and the sidewalks were widened in an effort to revitalize the area. The plan was not successful, but now that State Street is again open to automobile traffic and has a multi-million dollar face-lift, the businesses are again thriving.

State Street is not only a shopping, dining and entertainment attraction, but also an historical walking tour. Points of interest include the Chicago Theater, Macy's at Randolph and State, the Reliance Building at 32 N. State, the Chicago Building at State and Madison, the Harold Washington Public Library at State and Congress, and more.

Dining in the greater State Street area has as much history as its architecture with such favorites as the Walnut Room in Macy's, which was originally the first department store tea room; Berghoff Restaurant, a long-time popular German establishment; Trader Vic's in the Palmer House Hilton; and Billy Goat Tavern, known for its cheeseburgers.
